What Has Come Before

Brant Bladescream is a man who knows what he wants. Fame. Glory. Riches. These things tease at his mind like a siren's call. He's gathered together a number of like-minded individuals, drawn by promises of power and his vision of slain monsters and looted treasures. Truly, he is a leader among men, able to rally even the most skeptical individuals to his cause.

If only he had the brains to back up his plans.

Bladescream has slightly below average intelligence and wisdom; this manifests less as actual stupidity, and more as an irrational belief that he can pull of the craziest, most unrelalistic plans. The fact that he's been lucky enough to actually accomplish a few has only encouraged him.

This combined with his natural and magically augmented charisma has allowed him to gather together team after team of adventurers. Some are just as wild-eyed, intellectually challenged, and shorsighted as Bladescream, but even otherwise bright, rational individuals find themselves drawn into the man's wild-eyed schemes. About half of them will die on any given expedition, but those who survive tend to return with treasures every bit as impressive as what Bladescream promised.

And now he's preparing to trek to White Plume Mountain.

The Saga

CY 576. The village of Yellowreach. Brant Bladescream has assembled a force of adventurers to seek three mystical weapons held within the depths of White Plume Mountain.

Joining him:

  • Nomad, 7th level cleric of Pelor
  • Blades, 7th level rogue
  • Kozar, 7th level fighter
  • Vilirom, 7th level wizard

Head past sphinx, find large room with sea hag. Bladescream is sickened, while Nomad falls into the room. He is sickened by the site, and weakened. Nomad struggles to swim and sinks to the bottom of the room. The sphinx tries to sicken and kill Kozar, but fails.

Vilirom responds by lightning bolting the hag, killing her instantly. Meanwhile, Nomad is suddenly confronted by a monsterous clawed horror with a mouth of tentacles. It tries to grab him, but fails. Kozar throws a weighted rope into the water, and the cleric grabs it. As the fighter tries to pull Nomad to the surface though, the chull snags him with a claw, grabbing him. Fortunately, Brant and Kozar are able to pull him free, but the cleric still struggles to swim upwards.

The creature follows, trying to grab him, but fails. Finally Kozar is able to pull him out. "Tentacles. Claws. Slight loss of appetite."

The creature surfaces, and is magic missled by Vilirom. Blades and Brant fail to hit the creature; Nomad's searing light can not hurt it. The creature grabs Blades. Viirom blasts it with a lightning bolt, frying the creature slightly but hurting Blades in the process. The creature responds by transfering the rogue to it's tentacled maw, paralyzing him. Nomad sees, this and evokes the searing light again. It blasts through the creature's skull, killing it. The corpse sinks to the bottom of the pool ... taking Blades with him. Kozar dives in afterwards, and grabs him, rescuing him just before he drowns.

Brant, sapped of his strength by the hag, regains it after quaffing a potion of lesser restoration, and being similarly restored by Nomad.

Continue onward they find a room with a turning tunnel. They find an oil on it, light it with a fireball. Flying through it, Villirom finds a room beyond ... and is attacked by a half-plate wearing, bastard-sword wielding guard. The others charge in, Nomad moving slowly through it, Blades dancing through to reach the other room.

The wizard incapacitates the guard with tasha's laughter, but is then incinerated by the woman, who screams out "my lover!" as she fires her wand.

Bladescream and Kozar are caught in the tunnel, unable to get through it. Nomad heals Villirom, allowing him to regain consciousness. She's sliced by Blades, then killed by Nomad, who crushes her skull with a mace. They tie up the guard, demand to know what he knows. He knows little, just that he was brought to serve the werewolf, who in turn was there at the demand of the ancient wizard.

They find components in a fire-trapped chest that Villirom believes are part of an attuning ritual used with Wave. They leave the man tied up in the room.

They force their way up the corridor, forcing open the iron doors and finally reaching the cavern where they see the giant crab. The crab scurries forward, hitting Blades and grabbing him. Then Kozar charges forward, but the creature snatches him up as well. Brant charges the creature, successfully striking it, but then the creature falls back, constricting Kozar as it does so, causing excruciating pain.

The wizard advances, burning the creature with two scorching rays. Blades evokes his buckler, trying to blind the crab. It fails, but he does successfully blind Kozar.

Kozar fumbles out a dagger, and tries to kill the crab, but fails. The crab crushes Kozar, cutting him in half. It crushes Blades as well, bleeding him quite badly.

Villirom then casts wall of fire, which burns the crab, but ruptures the bubble, scalding Blades to death. The bubble ruptures, and Brant, Nomad and Villirom barely manages to escape to the surface.

They retreat to Yellowreach, and start contemplating their next move.
